Mark Gatiss – unrestricted theatre

Written by one of Britain’s best-loved playwrights Alan Bennett (The History Boys, The Lady in the Van), this epic play was also adapted into a BAFTA Award-winning film following its premiere on stage in 1991.

The cast of this new production from Nottingham Playhouse includes Olivier Award-winners Mark Gatiss (Sherlock, Wolf Hall, NT Live Coriolanus) in the title role, and Adrian Scarborough (Gavin and Stacey, Upstairs Downstairs, After the Dance).

It’s 1786 and King George III is the most powerful man in the world. But his behaviour is becoming increasingly erratic as he succumbs to fits of lunacy. With the King’s mind unravelling at a dramatic pace, ambitious politicians and the scheming Prince of Wales threaten to undermine the power of the Crown, and expose the fine line between a King and a man.

This week in the National Theatre Live series, the offering is 2014’s CORIOLANUS filmed at the Donmar Warehouse. Tom Hiddleston (Betrayal, The Avengers, The Night Manager) plays the title role in Shakespeare’s searing tragedy of political manipulation and revenge.

When an old adversary threatens Rome, the city calls once more on her hero and defender: Coriolanus. But he has enemies at home too. As famine threatens the city, the citizens’ hunger swells to an appetite for change, and on returning from the field, Coriolanus must confront the march of realpolitik and the voice of an angry people.

Josie Rourke (Les Liaisons Dangereuses) directs the company including Mark Gatiss (The Madness of George III, League of Gentlemen), Hadley Fraser (Long Day’s Journey Into Night, Young Frankenstein), Alfred Enoch (Tree, Harry Potter film series) and Deborah Findlay (Allelujah!, Top Girls).

GUIDANCE: This recording had a BBFC rating 12A when released in cinema. Contains scenes featuring occasional gore and staged violence.

The running time is 3 hours with a very brief interval. It is subtitled.
